DEFIANCE, Ohio – Logan Wolfrum scored the final 10 points of the game for Defiance and hit the game-winning shot with five seconds left to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 66-64 home win against Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. The shot was Wolfrum's fifth game-winner of the season and his third in DC's last three victories.
Wolfrum began to take the game over after MSJ took a 61-56 lead with 4:09 to play and drew the Jackets even with five-straight points on a pair of free throws and a long triple. The Ayersville High product connected on three more free throws over DC's next two possessions to force a 64-64 tie with 58 ticks remaining.
Wolfrum then delivered the knock out, sinking a pull-up jumper at the top of the key with 5.2 seconds to go. DC's first and only lead of the second half would hold, as a potential game-winning three-point shot from the Lions came up short to seal the, 66-64, Yellow Jacket victory.
Defiance outscored Mount St. Joseph by a 36-25 margin in the second half and connected on 10-of-14 attempts from the field for a blistering 71.4-percent rate over the final 20 minutes of action.
Wolfrum did the majority of that damage with 15 second-half points in 17 minutes and ended the afternoon with game-highs of 22 points, six assists and five rebounds. Anthony Brown continued his strong play of late, pouring in 13 points for his fifth-straight game in double digits and Kyle Tietje came off the bench for 11 points on four-of-four shooting.
The Jackets (9-12, 5-9 HCAC) moved to within two games of Franklin for the sixth and final spot in the HCAC Tournament field with the win and will head to Richmond, Ind., on Wednesday to face the Earlham (1-20, 1-13 HCAC) in search of their third-straight triumph.
