Esports Rundown: Three teams earn spots in NECC Playoffs
DEFIANCE, Ohio - Three teams among the Defiance College Esports program have earned postseason spots in the upcoming NECC Playoffs. Among the teams representing the Yellow Jackets are the Rocket League, Valorant and Overwatch 2 teams.
Led by first year head coach Avery Meiste, the Yellow Jackets are already flying to new heights with three teams in the postseason for the first time.
The Rocket League team finished unbeaten in their division with a flawless 7-0 record to earn the top spot in the bracket. The Yellow Jackets most recently took down Mount Union 3-0 and Saginaw Valley State 3-1. Their first playoff game will be against Northern Iowa on Nov. 14. Defiance won their conference of NECC Rocket League in 2022 and were runner-up in last fall's competition as they take aim at the program's second conference title.
In Overwatch, the team finished 5-2 and have had two weeks off in preparation for the postseason. The Yellow Jackets will battle Widener in the first round with the postseason beginning over the weekend of Nov. 23-24.
The Valorant team rallied to a four-game winning streak to close their regular season with a 5-2 record as well. Their last win over Middle Tennessee State propelled the team to the sixth seed for the upcoming playoffs on Nov. 11 against Clark University.
Defiance College Esports is in its seventh year of competition since starting the program in 2018-19. In addition to the NECC, the Yellow Jackets are also full members of the WHAC that sponsors conference titles in Rocket League, Overwatch, Valorant and League of Legends.
