Volleyball falls to Anderson at home
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College volleyball team lost in straight sets against Anderson in an HCAC match Wednesday evening at the Karl H. Weaner Center (21-25, 23-25, 18-25).
The Ravens improve to 12-11 overall and 4-2 in the HCAC. The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-19 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets came out of the gate strong and got a kill from Kaylynn Wellman and a service ace from Hope Yost to take an early 2-0 lead to start set one.. Anderson responded by winning the next five in a row and seven of ten to lead 7-4. Trailing 10-5, the Yellow Jackets capitalized on five attack errors by the Ravens and a kill by Jaelyn Tomoletz to retake the lead, 11-10. A kill by Shelby Clements extended Defiance's lead to 18-15. The Ravens once again answered with five straight points and in total would take eight of the final 11 points in the first set to win the set.
The second set featured five ties with all five coming early. With the set tied at nine, the Ravens won the next four and would hold the lead for the majority of the set. A kill by Courtney Maxwell and back-to-back kills from Jamia Murray brought the Yellow Jackets to within two, 16-14. Trailing 20-17, the Yellow Jackets got a block from Kaylynn Wellman and errors from their opponent to take a 21-20 lead. The Ravens answered again, and a block by Jaelyn Tomoletz made it 24-23 but the Ravens would close the set with a kill by Paige Ricica.
The Ravens scored the first three points of the third set and would lead for most of the set. The first point for the Yellow Jackets was a kill by Jaelyn Tomoletz. Defiance tied it at six following an attack error from Paige Ricica. Back-to-back kills by Kaylynn Wellman and Shelby Clements gave Defiance a 13-12 lead. Wellman added another kill but then the Ravens rattled off the next six to lead 22-15. The Yellow Jackets stayed alive with back-to-back kills by Jaelyn Tomoletz and Jamia Murray. Anderson went on to win the set and match with an attack error by Courtney Maxwell.
The Ravens ended the match with 37 kills, 34 assists, and 50 digs. The Yellow Jackets finished with 35 kills, 33 assists, and 48 digs.
Jamia Murray, Jaelyn Tomoletz, and Shelby Clements each finished with eight kills. Courtney Maxwell led the way in assists with 29 and Emma Chafins finished with 24 digs. Tomoletz added three solo blocks.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Franklin on Saturday, October 28 for a match against the Grizzlies at 1 p.m.
