ADRIAN, MICH. - The Defiance College volleyball team fell in straight sets on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to Adrian College for a non-conference clash with the Bulldogs.
The Yellow Jackets (2-13 overall, 0-1 HCAC) tallied 31 kills and a team-high 63 digs. Defiance was led in the contest by freshman Delaney Monnin (Defiance/Tinora) with a team-best 10 kills.
Adrian jumped ahead early in the opening set using a seven point rally to claim the 7-1 advantage before a kill by freshman Mackenzie Benham (Marshall, Mich.) halted the charging Bulldogs. DC tried to battle back as another Benham kill and a Adrian miscue cut the deficit to 16-11. However, the Bulldogs deemed to much as they captured set one 25-14.
In set two, the Yellow Jackets found themselves in a hole early as the Bulldogs surged to a 6-0 lead. Defiance continued to battle as they strung together a six point rally, led by junior Emma Seitz (Toledo/Central Catholic) with back-to-back kills cutting the deficit to 14-13. However, the Bulldogs pounced once more as they rattled off five straight points en route to the 25-19 victory.
DC battled strong in the final set as the attack of Monnin and junior Jessi Davis (Delta) gave the Yellow Jackets the 6-3 advantage. The two teams continued to exchange points for much of the set before back-to-back kills by Monnin gave DC the slight advantage. But once more Adrian strung together a series of points to take the 24-21 lead. Davis responded with a service ace for Defiance to pull the Purple and Gold within 24-23 before Adrian sealed the match on the following point.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 as they play host to Hanover College. The match is set for 1:00 pm.
