DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College volleyball team defeated Anderson (Ind.) University in straight sets, 3-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
The Yellow Jackets defeated the Ravens by the scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-16. The win was DC's third straight and have now won five of its last seven matches.
The DC offense posted a combined 39 kills in the match, led by the trio of junior Hope Neargarder (Union City/Mississinawa Valley), sophomore Meredith Shank (Maumee/Springfield) and freshman Marissa Windau (Castalia/Margaretta) who all had eight kills. Sophomore Danielle Robbins (Westland, Mich./Wayne Memorial) and freshman Brooke Plummer (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) both added six kills.
Junior Ari Mahaffey (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) had a match-high 32 assists to go along with a pair of kills.
On defense, two players recorded double-figure dig totals with Mahaffey leading the way with 11 digs. Senior Rebecca Kain (Orland, Ind./Prairie Heights) followed closely behind with 10 digs.
Shank, Neargarder and Windau led the team in blocking with two total blocks each. Shank and Neargarder both had a solo block and an assisted block, while Windau recorded a pair of assists.
Defiance will look for a possible fourth-straight win when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind. for a conference matchup against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology on Saturday, Oct. 24. The match is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
