TERRA HAUTE, Ind. – The Purple and Gold volleyball team defeated both the Webster Gorloks and Kenyon Lords in straight sets on Sunday, September 8. The pair of victories completed a 4-0 weekend that was the first for the Lady Jackets since 2011-12.
Head coach Brie Brenner couldn't have asked for much better of a weekend after the DC volleyball team struggled in its mid-week contest with UNOH on September 4. But the team regrouped and put together a near flawless weekend of four 3-0 shutouts.
After wins against Ohio Wesleyan and Muskingum yesterday, the Lady Jackets had an early start Sunday, as they opened up with the Gorloks at 10 am. In the first set, Defiance and Webster battled, but it was DC who came out on top with a 25-22 victory. Things got a little easier from there on out, as it won the second and third sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-11, respectively.
Senior Chelsea Ludeman was team leader in kills for the match, as she racked up 16. Junior Bree Anderson added eight kills and four total blocks, while senior Alicia Kalik had another solid day setting, notching 42. At the defensive end, sophomore Rebecca Kain came up with 27 digs to lead the squad.
In match two of the afternoon, the Lady Jackets took on the Kenyon Lady Lords for the second time this season and the result was much of the same. DC dominated in the contest, as it won in three sets 25-15, 25-10 and 25-12.
Ludeman was once again the offensive leader, totaling 13 points on 11 kills and a pair of solo blocks. Kalik added 30 assists and Kain notched 19 digs.
For their performance on the weekend, Ludeman and Kalik were named to the Rose-Hulman Tournament All-Tournament Team. Ludeman came away from the weekend with 54 kills, 31 digs and nine total blocks. It was the second time this year that the outside hitter earned all-tournament team honors. For the South Lyon, Michigan native Kalik, she totaled 140 assists, 29 digs and five total blocks.
The four-game weekend sweep was the first for the DC volleyball team since it completed the same feat at the Centre Tournament in the 2011-12 campaign.
The Lady Jackets now stand with a record of 7-2 on the year and will take on the Heidelberg Student Princes in their next match on Tuesday, September 10. The contest is slated for 7 pm in Tiffin, Ohio.
