Defiance Sweeps First Day of Action at OWU Invitational

DELAWARE, Ohio – Defiance did not drop a single set on Friday, sweeping Oberlin and Ohio Wesleyan in the first night of matches at the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational. The Jackets have now won three of their last four matches on the young season.
DC started fast and never looked back, bouncing Oberlin by a 25-9 margin in the opening set en route to the 3-0 victory. The Jackets would eventually seal the win with 25-16 and 25-22 victories in the next two sets.
Danyel Lipps and Sara Porter led the attack with eight kills each, while Marlea Rolander tacked on five kills and no errors in only eight swings. Kelsey Ferguson spread the wealth en route to 27 assists and Heather Bradshaw ended with 15 digs.
The Jackets stayed hot in the second contest of the evening, topping the host OWU Bishops 25-23, 25-15, 25-19. Rolander and Lipps were among the leaders on offense once again, combining for 15 kills, while Porter and Bradshaw teamed up for 32 digs on defense. Julie Brunsman was impressive at the setter position with 29 assists, 11 digs, two blocks and a pair of aces.
Defiance evens its record at 3-3 with the two wins and will look to continue its win streak on Saturday. The Jackets will take on Grove City at 11:00 am before playing Otterbein in the 1:00 pm match.
