Brunsman, Lipps Lead Yellow Jackets at Hornet Invitational
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Julie Brunsman wasted little time putting her stamp on the 2008 campaign, as the sophomore tallied 38 assists, 12 digs and five blocks in only her second collegiate contest at the setter position.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Julie Brunsman wasted little time putting her stamp on the 2008 campaign, as the sophomore tallied 38 assists, 12 digs and five blocks in only her second collegiate contest at the setter position. The breakout performance would not be enough to get Defiance the victory however, as DC fell in five sets to the host Kalamazoo team.
The Hornet Invitational got off to a rocky start for the Jackets, as Franklin bounced DC 25-12, 25-17, 25-16 in the opening round of action. Danyel Lipps led the way with six kills and 17 digs, while Heather Bradshaw added 12 digs and Brunsman tossed up 10 assists in the straight-set defeat.
Defiance bounced back with a much stronger showing in the night cap, with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 20-25, 15-10 loss to the Hornets. Brunsman and Lipps led the way once again, each turning in one of the finest performances on the first day of the nine-team tournament. Brunsman set a career high with her 38 helpers and Lipps narrowly missed out on a 20-20 match with 19 kills and 18 digs. Bradshaw and Sara Porter each played well on defense, teaming to scoop up 42 digs, while freshman Marlea Rolander rattled off nine kills in 22 swings to bolster the Yellow Jacket attack.
Defiance (0-2) will face two more matches on the second day of the Kalamazoo Hornet Invitational, as it takes on Ohio Wesleyan at 10:00 am and Baldwin-Wallace at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
