DC Track and Field Takes Third to Open Up Outdoor Season
CINCINNATI, Ohio – It was a quality start to the 2013 outdoor campaign for the Lady Jackets track and field team on Friday, March 22.
CINCINNATI, Ohio – It was a quality start to the 2013 outdoor campaign for the Lady Jackets track and field team on Friday, March 22. The squad came away with a third-place finish at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational, led by top-notch outing from senior Katie Heitkamp.
The St. Marys, Ohio, native had her best finish in the pole vault, where she took home first by clearing a height of 2.95 meters. Heitkamp also competed in the 800-meter event and came away with a second-place time of 2:35.93.
In hurdles competition, sophomore Brooke Lime had a good start to the season as well. The Defiance High product scored second in the 400 (1:10.14) and third in the 100 (16.72).
For the distance runners, a few Jackets came through with top marks on the afternoon. In the 1,500-meter run, DC took second through fourth with finishes from Sadie Daeger (5:52.47), Brittney Holmes (6:01.01), and Marissa Bussard (6:07.29). Than in the middle-distance 800-meter event, senior Erika DeBos came in the third place with a time of 2:38.07.
In field-event action freshman Kim Maro placed second in the javelin with a distance of 28.23 meters. Coming in third right behind her at a mark of 27.73 m was junior Stephanie Diemer. Other third-place finishes included junior Kim Bingley in the long jump (5.01 m) and senior Kate Borer in the pole vault (2.55 m)
Placing first overall at the meet with a score of 189 was Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference for Hanover College. In second was Campbellsville at 162, followed by DC with 116 points for third place.
The Yellow Jacket track and field team will return home to host the annual Dick Small Invitational next Friday, March 29. Action at the meet will begin at 11 a.m. out at the Justin F. Coressel Stadium.
