First-year runners Ashlyn Howell and Shavonda Price each received Freshman Athlete-of-the-Year honors after combining to produce 80 of the Yellow Jackets' 121.50 points at the HCAC Championship Meet, leading the women's team to a second-place finish.
Howell won a conference crown in the 4x400 meter relay, took second at the meet in the 400-meter relay and triple jump, and finished third in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Price joined Howell on DC's first-place 4x400 relay team and won the open 400-meter dash, while also claiming second place in the 200-meter dash and javelin throw, and third in the long jump.
Defiance has now produced four of the last five HCAC Most Outstanding Freshman Athlete-of-the-Year award winners.
Other all-conference performers on the women's team included Kristin Goldstein, Marlea Rolander, Courtney Swabb and Kaitlin Switzer.
Goldstein took part on the conference-winning 1,600-meter relay team, while also placing second in both the 400-meter relay and 100-meter dash.
