Women’s Track and Field Takes Second at Dick Small Invite
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women’s track and field team placed second overall in the 15th annual Dick Small Invitational on Saturday, March 20, garnering 165 points on the day.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's track and field team placed second overall in the 15th annual Dick Small Invitational on Saturday, March 20, garnering 165 points on the day. The meet kicks off the Yellow Jackets' 2010 outdoor season.
In sprints, Defiance ran well, as senior Kristin Goldstein won the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.13 seconds, and Ashlyn Howell claimed the top spot in the 200 meter dash, finishing in 28.06 seconds. Defiance had two more runners place in the top-four in the 200 meter race, with Goldstein and Marlea Rolander taking second and fourth place respectively.
Kelly Neff paced DC's mid-distance runners, finishing the 800 meter dash in 2:53.80, and earning second place at the meet.
DC hurdler, Marlea Rolander, lived up to her preseason hype, taking first place at the meet in the 100 meter hurdles. In the 400 meter hurdles, freshman Kaye Brockbrader took second place with a time of 1:22.52.
Hometown favorite, Kaitlin Switzer, led all runners in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:05.92. Switzer's time was more than 2:21 faster than the second-place finisher.
Defiance continued its dominance this season in pole vaulting, as Kaitlyn Sandercock, Katie Heitkamp and Emily Cole took first, second and third place at the meet respectively. Sandercock also performed well in the long jump, jumping 4.05 meters for the second-longest jump at the invitational.
Ashlyn Howell continued her terrific freshman campaign with a 9.92 meter triple jump, to take first place at the meet. The jump places Howell tied for fifth place on DC's all-time top performance list.
The Yellow Jackets crushed the field in the javelin throw, claiming the top four spots. Shavonda Price led all throwers with a heave of 33.05 meters to post the eighth-best performance in school history.
The Yellow Jackets will resume competition next Saturday, March 27, when they travel to Marion, Ind. to compete in the Indiana Wesleyan Polar Bear Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
