ANDERSON, Ind. – The Defiance College women's indoor track and field team set school records in the 1,000 meter run, distance medley relay and triple jump on their way to a third-place finish out of 11 teams at the Fred Wilt Memorial Meet in Anderson, Ind., on Saturday.
The distance medley relay team of Kaitlin Switzer, Kelly Neff, Erika DeBos and Ellen Stryfeller stole the show with a 13:45.87 finish that broke the previous school record by 44.6 seconds.
Switzer broke another school record in the 1,000 meter run, improving her own record in the event by nearly two seconds as she crossed the line in 3:16.94 to take first place at the meet. Kaye Brockbrader finished third in the event with a time 3:35.12, which ranks the freshman runner number four on the DC top-ten performances list.
Pole vaulting continued to be a strong event for the Jackets as Kaitlyn Sandercock and Katie Heitkamp claimed first and third place at the meet respectively. Sandercock's height of 9-06.25 ties the freshman vaulter for the best performance in school history, while Heitkamp's clearance of 9-00.25 ranks her third in the DC record books.
Ashlyn Howell had another terrific meet for DC as she jumped 10.40 meters in the triple jump, which took first place at the meet and gives her the single best performance in school history for the event. Howell continued her strong meet with a 64.01 second four hundred meter dash that ranks as the third-best performance in school history for that event.
DC track athletes will have one more opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Div. III National Championships on March 12, when they compete in the Mount Union Last Chance Meet in Alliance, Ohio, on Saturday, March 6. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
