Yellow Jackets Narrowly Edged By Quakers
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College women's tennis team gave it their best effort this evening, being narrowly edged 5-4 to Earlham College at the George M. Smart Athletic Center.
In doubles action, Defiance came out on top, winning two of the three flights. At first doubles, Hannah Hesterman and Cayla Walker cruised past the Quakers 8-1 while third doubles partners Mackenzie Combs and Courtney Alexander eked out an 8-6 victory against Earlham. Tandem AJ Breneman and Sydney Huston were defeated at second doubles 8-5.
The Yellow Jackets continued to pile on the wins against EC in singles play, taking first and second as Hesterman and Breneman defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0 respectively. They stumbled at third, fourth and fifth singles however. Walker fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles while Alexander dropped number four singles 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. Combs was routed 6-0, 6-2 at fifth singles.
In a final clash at sixth singles, Huston did her best to battle but ultimately fell 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, giving the Quakers the 5-4 win.
Defiance returns to the courts on Friday, October 6 as they host Illinois Valley Community College at the Dix Tennis Facility. First serve is set for 4:00 PM.
