Women's Tennis Beats Salem International

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Defiance College women's tennis team began its "southern swing" with a 5-4 victory against Salem (W.Va.) International University in Hilton Head, S.C.
Defiance (3-11) took two of the three doubles matches at first and third doubles. The team of sophomores Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and Cayla Walker (Archbold) prevailed in their first doubles match, winning by the score of 8-3. Sophomore Stephanie Houston (Amherst/Marion L. Steele) and junior Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) combined to capture a close match at third doubles by the final of 8-6 as DC lead 2-1 overall in the match heading into singles action.
The Jackets split the singles matches with victories coming at first, third and fourth singles. All six matches were played in pro-sets with Hesterman defeating her opponent at first singles, 8-1. Walker also posted an identical score in her matchup at third singles, 8-1, and Alexander rounded out the victories by defeating her fourth singles opponent, 8-3.
In the remaining singles matches, Vance played a close match at second singles, but would be edged, 8-6. Houston also played a tough fifth singles matchup winning five games, but fell short overall, 8-5. Rounding out the singles matches was Combs at sixth singles losing by the final score of 8-1.
Defiance will next compete on Wednesday, Mar. 8 in a match against DeSales (Pa.) University. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
