Defiance Falls to Alma

DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College women's tennis team hosted Alma (Mich.) College in a non-conference match and lost to the Scots, 8-2, at the George M. Smart Center.
Sophomores Hannah Hesterman (Archbold) and Cayla Walker (Archbold) put up a tough fight in the first doubles match as they went to a tiebreaker to decide the outcome, but fell short by a final score of 9-8 (7-5).
Sophomore Danielle Vance (Defiance) and junior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol) rallied back and forth at second doubles, but took an 8-4 loss. Junior Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) and sophomore Stephanie Houston (Amherst/Marion L. Steele) teamed up at third doubles and were defeated by the final of 8-1.
In singles action, the lone win was turned in by Hesterman at first singles, winning by the scores of 6-0 and 6-2. In the other singles matches, Vance took on her Alma opponent at second singles, but fell by the scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
After dropping her set, 6-0, at fourth singles, Alexander came back in a hard fought second set where she she was outlasted, 6-4. Houston won games in both sets, making her partner work hard, but would drop both sets by the scsores of 6-4 and 6-1.
Rounding out the action was Walker at third singles in an abbreviated pro set and won three games, but fell short in the overall match, 8-3.
Defiance will next head south to Hilton Head, S.C. to compete in the Spring Tennis Fest. The Jackets will take on DeSales (Pa.) University in its first of three matches during the week, beginning on Wednesday, Mar. 8. The start time has yet to be determined.
