Jackets Shutout by Mount St. Joseph
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's team was defeated by Mount St. Joseph University, 9-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match at the George M. Smart Athletic Center in Defiance.
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College women's team was defeated by Mount St. Joseph University, 9-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match at the George M. Smart Athletic Center in Defiance.
Mount St. Joseph (4-3, 1-2 HCAC) took an early 3-0 match lead after winning all three doubles matches, but not without some heavy competition from Defiance (1-6, 0-3 HCAC). At the first doubles spot, the duo of sophomore Danielle Vance (Defiance) and junior Courtney Alexander (Bristolville/Bristol) took five points before their opponents would prevail, 8-5.
Senior Colby Heeter (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and sophomore Cayla Walker (Archbold) played a very competitive second doubles match, forcing their opponents to go the extra distance to win the matchup in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-3). The final duo of junior Mackenzie Combs (Milford Center/Fairbanks) and sophomore Stephanie Houston (Amherst/Marion L. Steele) won two points at third singles, but their opponents would capture an 8-2 victory.
In singles action, Heeter continued her stong play from doubles during her third singles match. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Heeter came back to capture the second set, 6-3, and force a deciding third set. The third set consisted of a pro-set in which the edge went in favor of MSJ, 10-6.
Alexander also played a close match at second singles, capturing five points in the first set and one in the second, but would drop the overall matchup by the scores of 7-5 and 6-1. Walker took on her opponent at the fourth singles spot and took three points in each set with the Lions winning by the scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
Houston also scored points in each set of her sixth-singles match with two in the first (6-2) and one in the second (6-1). At fifth singles, Combs lost her first set, 6-0, and won a point in set number two, but falling by the overall score of 6-1.
Defiance will travel to North Manchester, Ind. for a HCAC match againt Manchester (Ind.) University on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
