DEFIANCE, Ohio- The Defiance College women's soccer team played host to Transylvania University on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. Despite a competitive second half, the Yellow Jackets fell 5-0 to the Pioneers.
The away side was able to break through in the first ten minutes, taking a quick 1-0 lead. Once again, the Yellow Jacket defense held a tight line catching the Pioneers offside eight times in the first half.
Despite the tough defense, Transylvania continued to pester goalkeeper Madi Bowman (Eaton, Ohio/ Eaton) with shots. Bowman tallied eight saves on the day, but the Pioneer offense prevailed taking a 3-0 lead after the first forty-five minutes of play.
After the break, Defiance came out with new energy controlling the ball for a portion of the second half. The Purple and Gold created opportunities to score off of three corner kicks within an eleven-minute span of play.
Senior, Kat Wicher (Toledo, Ohio. / Whitmer), served a ball to Blake Newman (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) who headed it just wide of the frame. Wicher led the shot category for Defiance with four shots, followed closely by Newman, who took three shots on the day. In spite of the offensive push, the Yellow Jackets were unable to find the back of the net.
The Pioneers would see to tack on two more goals in the second half, securing the 5-0 win over the Yellow Jackets.
The loss brings the Purple and Gold record to 4-11-1 on the season and 0-5 in HCAC play. The Defiance College women's soccer team continues Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, October 23, as they travel to Manchester University to take on the Spartans. The contest is slated to start at 3:30 pm.
