MARIETTA, Ohio – DC would strike first, but couldn't capitalize as they fall, 3-1, to Wooster.
Coming fresh off a win just 24 hours before, the Yellow Jackets (2-2-0) looked to continue their winning ways against Wooster (3-1-0) at the Marietta Tournament.
June Delgreco (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Crestwood) would be busy all day in goal for DC. She saved one early for the Yellow Jackets, keeping the score at 0-0 just 10 minutes into the game.
With Delgreco's save, DC would go immediately on the offense. Lindsay Bubnick (Vandalia, Ohio / Butler) was able to find goal at the other end for Defiance.
Bubnick gathered herself from outside the 18 yard box and let go of a shot that was heading right toward goal. The goalkeeper was able to get a touch on it, but not enough of one to turn it away. DC held the early 1-0 lead at that point.
Wooster's offense then turned it on. In the 17th and 18th minutes, the Yellow Jacket defense surrendered two goals to the opposition.
Delgreco then got busy, saving five shots before the first half came to a close. Wooster would hold the slim 2-1 lead over DC at intermission.
Wooster kept DC on its heels into the second half. The defense did its job and didn't surrender another goal early in the half despite being pressured.
Melina Alexander (Clio, Mich. / Clio Area) nearly found goal twice midway through the second half. She let go of a couple shots that both required a play from the goalie to keep the 2-1 score.
With just over ten minutes left to play, Wooster again found goal and put the score at 3-1. That proved to be too much of a gap for the Yellow Jackets as they fell for their second loss of the season.
Delgreco ended the match with a career high 10 saves.
DC will come back home on Wednesday, September 10 to play host to Oberlin. Kickoff time is set for 4 pm.
