DEFIANCE, Ohio –The Defiance College Lady Yellow Jackets dropped a dramatic match on Tuesday evening as DC was defeated by Marygrove College by a score of 4-3. The loss drops the Jackets' record to 3-6.
The game opened up with Defiance dominating possession in the opening minutes, but DC was unable to breakthrough on the score sheet.
In the 23rd minute the Mustangs' Kaylie Guellec was able to get behind the DC back line on a counter and slot her shot past the keeper to give Marygrove a 1-0 advantage. Just five minutes later Guellec struck again as she beat the Defiance defense and scored the Mustangs' second goal.
The Jackets entered the halftime break down 2-0 despite recording the same amount of shots as Marygrove and having the majority of possession.
In the 56th minute Defiance got its first goal when Alicia Ledford was taken down in the box by a Mustang defender and was awarded a penalty kick. Bibiana Parra stepped up to the spot and recorded her second penalty kick goal of the season to draw the Jackets back to within one.
Both teams battled for the next 20 minutes as each team had goal scoring opportunities with neither able to finish. Then in the 74th minute freshman forward Genelle Castro broke into the box and ripped a shot past the keeper into the upper right side of the net to level the game at 2-2. The goal is Castro's first career goal at DC.
As the game appeared to be headed toward overtime, Marygrove scored a goal in the 88th minute to give it a 3-2 lead with just over two minutes remaining on the clock. The goal occurred when the Yellow Jackets had a defensive miscommunication and Marygrove's Cheyenne York slotted past the keeper.
In the waning seconds of regulation Defiance came back once again and knotted the score back up at three goals apiece. Alicia Ledford managed to get behind the defense and scored her third goal of the season with just under a minute left on the clock to force the overtime session.
The overtime session was a battle of wills as both teams were physically exhausted. In the game's final minute Marygrove found the gamewinner when Guellec's cross connected with York, as she nodded the ball into the goal with eight seconds remaining on the clock.
Defiance's next match is Saturday, October 1 when it hosts Hanover at 1:00 p.m.
