DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance Lady Yellow Jackets dropped a close 1-0 decision to Capital University on Wednesday afternoon. The loss marks the third consecutive defeat for the Jackets and brings their record down to 1-4.
To begin the game each team had a fairly even amount of possession and opportunities in the first half. The Jackets' best opportunity of the game came around the 15th minute when freshman forward Genelle Castro was played into the box and collided with Capital's keeper. With the keeper on the ground, no Defiance player was able to gain possession and find the back of the net.
Capital was able to get the game's first and what turned out to be the only goal in the 28th minute when there was a mad scramble on Defiance's endline and the Crusaders' Katherine Connell flicked it in across the goal line and into the side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Defiance went into the break trailing 1-0 despite playing even with Capital. Each team had three corners and Capital attempted nine shots to Defiance's seven.
After coming out of the halftime break the Crusaders controlled much of the possession and outshot the Jackets fourteen to two. DC tried to counter with passes over the top to its forwards but was unable to connect for the equalizing goal.
Lady Jackets' sophomore goalkeeper Aileen Clouse had a strong showing, stopping nine of the 10 shots that were on target.
The next time the Jackets are in action is Saturday, September 17 at Wilmington College. The game will start at 5 p.m. followed by the men's game.
