DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Lady Jackets hung tough with the top team in the conference on Tuesday evening, but could not get any points on the board as they fell, 2-0, to the Earlham College Quakers. Defiance drops to 2-3-1 in the HCAC with the loss, and remains in fifth place with three games remaining.
The Yellow Jacket defenders and their all-conference goalkeeper kept the game close throughout as they held the Quakers below their scoring average for the season, but the Quakers' defense was stifling, holding DC to just eight shots in the game. Defiance had a few chances to score, including a free kick from Melissa Alston in the second half that looked like it had a chance, but Earlham's Megan Holthaus kept the ball out of the net to pick up her seventh shutout of the season.
Janelle Doenges recorded three shots, including two shots on goal, to lead Defiance offensively. Kelly Coble picked up 10 saves in the match to add to her conference-high saves total (107), and eclipsed the 100-save mark for the second-straight season.
The Lady Jackets will need to win their next three contests to keep their playoff hopes alive, and will hit the road for their next two contests, beginning on Saturday with a match at Mount St. Joseph (5-7-2, 4-1 HCAC). After a Tuesday evening game at Bluffton on Oct. 26, the Jackets will host Rose-Hulman on Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 30.
