DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Lady Jackets pulled off their second shutout in three games, and their third of the season, as they defeated Manchester, 2-0, on Tuesday. With just five games remaining on the regular season schedule, Defiance is in the middle of the playoff race with a 2-1-1 record in the HCAC.
It was an important game for Defiance to keep its position in the conference standings, and the team's performance reflected the significance, as the Yellow Jackets played with noticeable purposefulness and aggressiveness.
Freshman forward, Karly Smith, continued her hot streak when she scored he second goal in three games at the 19-minute mark to give Defiance the early lead. Smith found enough space in front of the net to corral a loose ball between two Manchester defenders, and caught the goalkeeper off guard with a perfectly placed bicycle kick for the first goal of the match.
Defiance continued to apply offensive pressure with several near-goal shots that deflected off the crossbar, before finally adding to the lead with less than ten minutes left in regulation. Bibianna Parra connected off a feed from Hailey Trubey in the 82nd minute to record her first goal of the season, and essentially ice the game for Defiance.
Kelly Coble recorded her third shutout of the season, and remains first in the HCAC with 87 saves this season.
Next on the schedule for Defiance (4-5-3, 2-1-1 HCAC) is a road game against the conference-leading Pioneers of Transylvania University (9-3-1, 4-0 HCAC). The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 16.
