DETROIT – The Defiance College women's soccer team ended on the winning side of a 1-0 decision against Marygrove College (3-6) on Tuesday evening. DC Goalkeeper, Kelly Coble, earned her second shutout of the season, while bumping her conference-high saves total up to 80.
Karly Smith picked up the only goal of the match in the 20th minute of the opening period to put Defiance ahead for good. It was the second goal of the season for the freshman forward, and also the second game-winner of her young career. Smith, Melissa Alston and Cherilyn Borkholder each recorded two shots on goal in the game to lead DC's offensive attack.
The Yellow Jackets' defense has been the team's greatest strength through the first 11 games of the season. After ranking near the bottom of the HCAC with a 2.6 goals against average in 2009, Defiance has allowed only 1.1 goals per game to opponents during the 2010 campaign. Coble has been a huge part of the defense's success, with a conference-best .879 save percentage.
The win over Marygrove concludes the Yellow Jackets' non-conference schedule. Defiance will host Franklin College (3-6, 0-2 HCAC) on Saturday, October 9, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
