Yellow Jackets match second-lowest team round of the year, Rose-Hulman holds overall lead at HCAC Women’s Championship
OTTAWA, Ohio – The second day of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship surpassed day one in weather and scores as Moose Landing Country Club as a new individual leader emerged while Rose-Hulman's team lead remains intact.
Mount St. Joseph sophomore Alyssa Haverstraw fired the lowest round of the day by posting a 73 during the second round to take a three-stroke lead into the final day of competition (83, 73, 156). Friday's leader Precious Saelee from Rose-Hulman dropped to third with a 160 two-day total (81, 79) with teammate Meg Fosnot holding on to second place by one stroke (82, 77, 159). The Fighting Engineers possess a 24-stroke advantage over second-place Transylvania through 36 holes (334, 308, 642).
Eight of the 10 teams compiled lower rounds in Saturday's sunshine after battling showers during Friday's action. That included the Yellow Jackets quartet of Winter Boroff (Convoy, Ohio/Lincolnview), Isabelle Vance (Continental, Ohio/Miller City), Cassady Van Dyke (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and Mari Najar (Adrian, Mich./Madison). DC's group improved by 18 strokes with a 355 team score, matching the second-lowest of the season and tied for third-lowest in program history.
Boroff turned in the low card of the day for the Yellow Jackets with an 84, bringing her two-day total to 171 and tied for 13th. That scorecard cracks the program record books with a tie for ninth and her second-lowest round of her career. Her card looked clean for much of the day with a 39 over the front nine aided by a seventh-hole birdie, four pars and four bogies. On the back nine, Boroff put together back-to-back pars on 16 and 17 before a double-bogey at 18 made her just miss a new career-best round.
Vance tied her own personal best with an 87, eight strokes better than Friday's 95. She opened the day with one-over play through three holes and turned in just two double-bogies. Vance is just outside the top 20, tied for 24th with a 182 total.
Van Dyke shaved two strokes off her day one 93 with a 91 on Saturday and had 66 on her card through 14 holes before needing 25 over the final four holes. For Najar, she fired a 93 to better Friday's 98. She got stronger as the day wore on after starting nine-over through five holes to manage a 12-over pace over the last 13 holes, including a total of 45 on the back nine.
After two rounds, the Yellow Jackets stand in sixth place as a team and 15 shots out of fifth-place Bluffton.
The HCAC Women's Championship's third round is set for Sunday morning to wrap up the 54-hole competition.
