ANDERSON, Ind. – The Defiance College women's golf team turned in its best performance since the program was reinstated for the 2006 campaign by firing a 735 over two rounds at the Anderson Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
The Yellow Jackets' two-round tally of 735 marked a 46-shot improvement of their previous record of 781 set at the same event two years ago. DC also set a new record for the best single-round score since the reinstatement by carding a 361 on Sunday to edge its previous 18-hole mark by 18 strokes.
The team marks were fueled by the play of Kelly Beard, as the junior fired an 81 on Sunday to end in 11th with a two-day score of 177. Beard's score of 81 was the best for the program since 2006, edging the previous mark of 91 which was most recently posted by Sarah Westfall in the final round of the 2010 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Beard was followed by Phoenix Golnick's 183 and 19th-place finish. Golnick's final round of 88 was second only to Beard's Sunday score for the best single-round since 2006 for Defiance. That duo was followed up by two-day totals of 187 from Westfall and 188 from Tara Miller, giving DC four top-25 performances at the event.
Hanover's Paige Schroeder won the individual honors by shooting a 155 to lead her Panthers to the team crown. HC's 636 was 52 shoots better than second-place Anderson's 688, who was followed by Manchester (707), Franklin (719), Defiance (735) and Rose-Hulman (758) in the standings.
Defiance will be back on the links on Tuesday, September 13 when it competes at the Jon Spiess Memorial at 10:30 am. The 18-hole tournament will be played at the Ironwood Golf Course in Wauseon, Ohio.
