Jackets Continue Improvement on the Links at AU Invitational

ANDERSON, Ind. – In only their second tournament of the fall season, the Defiance College women's golf team took another major step forward. The Jackets shot a 402 on day one, before logging a 379 on the second day to end with a 781 at the Anderson Invitational.
The final score of 781 was 66 strokes better than DC's total in the season-opening Racer Invitational on September 1 and marked the team's best two-day score since the program was reinstated for the 2006 season.
Phoenix Golnick and Tara Miller led the Yellow Jackets on Saturday by each cracking the 100-shot barrier. DC then saw its top four competitors post sub-100 scores on Sunday, with Golnick and Miller carding a 91, while Kelly Beard shot a 98 and Brittany Gow recorded a 99.
Golnick led the way for Defiance in the two-day event with a 189, one shot better than Miller's 190. Beard followed with a 198, while Gow finished at 204 to round out Defiance's 781 and ninth-place finish.
DePauw won the team championship with a 635 to finish eight strokes ahead of Olivet in the team standings. Franklin's 650 was good for third, while Transylvania (656), Hanover (661), Rose-Hulman (708), Manchester (717), Anderson (759) and Defiance filled out the standings.
Olivet's Megan Rimmel took home medalist honors, after carding a 76 in each round for a two-day total of 152. Hanover's Molly Burpo ended second and three shots off the pace with a 155.
Defiance will look to continue moving forward next weekend, when it plays at the Hanover Invitational on September 12 and 13.
