Women’s Golf Opens 2009-2010 Year for Yellow Jackets
LIMA, Ohio – The 2009-2010 athletic season got underway on Friday and Saturday for Defiance College, as the women’s golf squad competed in the two-day Racer Invitational.
LIMA, Ohio – The 2009-2010 athletic season got underway on Friday and Saturday for Defiance College, as the women's golf squad competed in the two-day Racer Invitational. The event was hosted by Northwestern Ohio and saw the Jackets finish sixth with a total score of 847.
Tara Miller, one of only two returning players for DC, led the Purple and Gold with a two-round total of 196. Miller finished 31st in the standings and was followed by freshmen Phoenix Golnick and Kelly Beard. Golnick led the Jackets with 97 on Saturday and ended in 32nd with a 201, while Beard started her collegiate career with a 217 to finish in 33rd position.
Walsh topped the team standings with a 634 to finish 22 strokes up on St. Francis (656) and 45 shots ahead of third-place Madonna (679). Northwestern Ohio took fourth with a 695 and was followed by Indiana Tech (715) and Defiance.
Kim Smith of Walsh claimed medalist honors by firing a pair of sub-80 scores to finish with a 151. That tally was seven better than a pair of Walsh teammates, Nikki Kulasa and Katie Kohut, who tied for second with a 158.
Defiance will be back on the links on September 5 at noon, when it plays the first of two rounds in the Anderson Invitational.
