DEFIANCE, Ohio – DC's women's basketball team climbed back into the thick of the conference standings with a 93-82 win over Mount St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Jackets (9-6, 3-3 HCAC) move into fourth place in the HCAC with the victory.
Mount St. Joseph got out to an early 8-4 lead, but Defiance would battle back to tie the game, 10-10, at the 14:55 mark before Brooke Zachrich's layup 15 second later gave the Lady Jackets a lead that they would never relinquish. Freshman guard Hanna Firchau had a career-high nine points by halftime and the Jackets went in to the break with a nine point lead.
Defiance extended its advantage after halftime, building its lead to as much as 24 points midway through the second stanza. The large lead allowed coach Doumanian to give some of the younger players extended minutes as the Jackets coasted to their eighth win in nine home games this season.
DC's 93 points represent a season-high for the Lady Jackets who reclaim their ranking as the leading scorers in the HCAC with 73 points per game. Five Yellow Jackets scored in double digits and Hanna Firchau, Shavonda Price and Mandie White each tied for the game-high with 16 points.
Firchau's 16 points were a career-best and came in just 17 minutes of action. Tasha Stucke tied her career-high with seven steals in the game and is now first in the conference with 33 steals on the season. White has averaged 20.3 points and 12 rebounds over the last three games and is currently just 45 points shy of 1,000 career points.
The Lady Jackets get a week off before hosting conference-leading Franklin College (11-3, 5-0 HCAC) on Saturday, January 16 at the Karl H. Weaner Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
