ORLANDO – The Defiance College softball team played two games on Monday morning down in Orlando, Fl. for the Rebel Games over spring break. The bats struggled to get going as the Yellow Jackets lost both games on the day.
Sophomore pitcher Kailea Holbrook took the rubber for game one against Otterbein. Holbrook entered the game with a sparkling earned run average of 0.68 in two starts; however, the sophomore had an off day on Monday. Otterbein struck for five runs in the top half of the first, one in the second and three in the third.
DC managed to plate a run in the bottom of the first but was inept at the plate for the remainder of the game. Defiance managed only four hits in the game, all of which were singles. The final score of the game was 10-1 in five innings.
The Jackets' offensive woes carried over from game one to game two, when they faced a 2-1 Marietta team. Freshman pitcher Lauren Dicke held the Pioneers scoreless through the first three innings, but unfortunately had no runs in support.
Marietta scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning when right fielder Trayla Liles hit a run scoring single to center. Defiance came back and tied the game in the top of the sixth inning off a Stephanie Esquibel infield single that scored Jessie Arnold. The Jackets were in a position to take the lead after Lauren Dicke walked to load the bases with only one out, yet the Pioneers were able to retire the next two DC batters, keeping the score knotted up at one run apiece.
In the bottom of the frame, Marietta's bats came alive, as it scored three runs on three hits giving the Pioneers a 4-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets were unable to score any runs in the top of the seventh and lost their second game of the day.
Defiance will try to rebound on Wednesday as it faces McDaniel at 1:00 p.m. followed by a game against Framingham State at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be in Orlando, Fl. as a part of the Rebel Games.
