DC Splits a Pair of Games at Centre to Open Season
DANVILLE, Ky. – The Defiance College softball team got its season underway on Friday evening in Danville, Ky. as it squared off against Centre College. The Yellow Jackets dropped the opener 10-5, but managed to rally and win game two by a score of 5-3.

In the first game the Jackets fell behind early, as Centre jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings. DC fought its way back in the top of the fourth thanks to a leadoff double from Jessica Mandula and RBI singles from Lauren Dicke and Jordan Sawmiller. The momentum was short-lived as Centre rallied to plate seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
The highlight of the game for the Purple and Gold was sophomore Macy Ferrall's two-run homerun in the top of the sixth, the second of her career. On the evening, Ferrall had a standout performance, going 3-6 with a homerun, three runs batted in, and two runs.
The young Yellow Jacket squad showed its resilience after dropping the opener. DC got on the board first in the second game when Ferrall drove in Stephanie Esquibel in the top of the second.
In the top of the fourth, DC was able to add two more runs on a bases loaded single from senior Katelyn Samples. The hit gave Defiance a 3-0 lead.
On the mound sophomore pitcher Kailea Holbrook was dealing. Holbrook pitched five and a third innings, while only giving up two runs on three hits. None of the runs were earned. Relieving the sophomore in the sixth inning was Samples. The senior pitched the final inning and a third and notched the first save of her career.
Centre pushed across two runs in the sixth inning, narrowing the margin to 3-2. The Jackets answered right back in the top of the seventh adding two insurance runs on multiple Centre errors. Defiance went on to win 5-3.
The Yellow Jackets are now 1-1 as they head down to Orlando, Fla. for the Rebel Games during their spring break. The first game begins Sunday at 9 a.m. against Washington (Md.) followed by a game against Millikin, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
