The Beavers jumped out to an early lead in the first game, scoring four runs on six hits in the opening frame to put Defiance in an early hole.
A shift in momentum appeared to be on the verge in the bottom of the second, when Marah Robinson ripped a leadoff home run over the left-center field wall to start the inning. However, there would be no more offense to come, as the game came to a close with just one run on the scoreboard for the Jackets.
Brittany Gow pitched for Defiance in the second contest, and held Bluffton to just two runs through the first five innings, but the Beavers erupted with six runs in the top of the sixth to put the Jackets down by eight.
Defiance needed a run to stay alive in the bottom of the sixth. The inning got off to a promising start, with Robinson and Aarika Davis each reaching base safely with zero outs. However, the Jackets were unable to capitalize, leaving two runners on base as the game came to an early close.
The Jackets will have a chance to bounce back on Friday, March 2, when they host the Grizzlies of Franklin College (4-10, 0-0 HCAC) in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
