ANDERSON, Ind. – The Lady Jackets took part in their first conference competition of the season on Saturday, March 27, with a doubleheader in Anderson, Ind. Defiance dropped the first game, 8-5, before bouncing back to shut out the Ravens, 3-0, in the second contest.
In four of their last eight games, the Yellow Jackets have surrendered at least one run in the first inning. That trend continued on Saturday, as the Ravens scored two runs in the first inning, followed by a three-run second inning, to put Defiance in an early 5-0 hole.
DC's offense got going with one run in the third inning to make it a four-run game. In the sixth inning, the Jackets notched on three more runs to cut the deficit to two, but that was as close as they would get. The Ravens would score two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth and held DC to one run with three left on base in the top of the seventh to complete the game.
Brittany Gow toed the rubber for the Jackets in the second contest, and pitched a beauty, giving up just three hits and no runs on the way to her second complete-game victory of the season.
The Yellow Jackets' offense found some early success this time, recording runs in each of the first two innings, before tallying another in the fifth frame to ensure their first HCAC victory of the season, and move to 1-1 in the conference.
Defiance will return to Sal Hench Field on Tuesday, March 30, to host the Beavers of Bluffton University (3-10, 2-0 HCAC) in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
