DEFIANCE, Ohio – Elizabeth Petrie has been selected by the Defiance College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as the first-ever winner of the SAAC Sportsmanship Award. The new honor is part of the NCAA's ongoing Respect Campaign and will be announced every two weeks throughout the remainder of the spring semester.
Student-athletes are nominated for the honor by their head coach and the winner is determined by the vote of the Defiance College SAAC members. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be involved in an in-season sport and must consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout their season.
Petrie was nominated by softball head coach Jodie Holava who stated, "Elizabeth has a great attitude and is always willing to go the extra mile for her teammates. She is very energetic at games and stays positive no matter the situation." Holava continued, "Prior to each game, she prepares a quote or motivational piece for each teammate and that has become a part of DC softball tradition. She has taken over the role of providing this for her teammates and it is something everyone looks forward to before the games."
Petrie is a junior corner infielder for the Yellow Jackets, who are currently ranked No. 30 in the nation and in the midst of a 9-1 start.
