Outdoor track season begins at Cedarville Yellow Jacket Open
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Defiance College men's and women's track and field team opened the 2021 outdoor season on Saturday at the Cedarville University Yellow Jacket Open in Cedarville, Ohio. The event hosted 33 teams from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA.
The women's team did not record a team score while the men finished tied for 18th out of 24 teams. The Yellow Jackets finished ahead of Heartland Collegiate Atheltic Conference rivals Anderson, Bluffton, and Earlham. The University of Dayton placed first in the women's competition while Tiffin University won the men's division.
Tawon Cannon recorded all four of Defiance's points with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Cannon recorded a time of 55.22 seconds in the event.
The Yellow Jackets also recorded 13th place finish in the 4x400 meter relay by the team of Robert Marshall, Cannon, Connor Bujalski, and John Reese. The team clocked a time of 3:40.46.
Freshman Tyrel Goings was Defiance's top finisher in the shot put with a throw of 11.94m. Kaleb Tyree (10.26m) and Ron Scott (8.94m) also competed in the event. Scott recorded the trio's best throw in the discus with a toss of 28.32m.
On the woman's side, Lisa Markau and Deleita Powell placed 69th and 774th in the 200-meters with times of 29.86 and 31.39. Shi'Nique Lawrence placed 35th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.77.
Both teams will be back in action on Friday at the Kentucky Wesleyan Twilight Invitational in Owensboro, Ky.
