DC Competes in Twilight Invitational
TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Defiance College men's track and field team competed in the Twilight Invitational hosted by Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. and placed 11th overall.
TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Defiance College men's track and field team competed in the Twilight Invitational hosted by Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. and placed 11th overall.
Defiance finished with a pair of team points to place 11th out of 11 teams. Host school Rose-Hulman edged the field to claim the team title with 199 points. Greenville (Ill.) College was second with 196.5 points and Illinois College rounded out the top three with 83.5 points.
Freshman Vincent LaMonte (Norwalk) posted the top finish for the Yellow Jackets in the running events with a 14th-place showing in the 100-meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 11.85 seconds.
In the throwing events, sophomore Javier Castillo (Nogales, Ariz./Noglaes) had three top-10 finishes beginning with a seventh-place effort in the shot put with a best throw of 43' 8.50". He also placed ninth overall in the hammer throw (145' 9.00") and 10th in the discus (126' 8.00).
Four other DC athletes competed in the shot put, including two in the top-15. Senior Nick Rath (Defiance) was the next closest Jacket in 13th place with a throw of 38' 9.50". Sophomore Justin Bergquist (Cincinnati/Northwest) placed two spots back in 15th following a mark of 38' 0.75". Freshman Kaleb Tyree (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) finished just behind Berquist in 16th (37' 6.00") and junior Joshua Petro (Ocala, Fla./The Villages) was 18th (36' 8.25").
Also competiing in the discus were a trio of Jackets that included Rath who placed 16th overall (117' 4.00") and Petro was 17th (115' 1.00"). Sophomore Andrew Fahler (Wellington) cracked the top-20 with a distance of 114' 6.00".
Joining Castillo in the hammer were Petro and Fahler who placed 11th and 14th respectively with distances of 142' 10.00" and 139' 11.00".
Two Jackets placed in the top-20 in the javelin. Rath recorded the top overall distance for DC of 124' 6.00" which put him in 15th place. Bergquist (Cincinnati/Northwest) placed just inside the top-20 in the 19th spot with a throw of 114' 7.00".
Defiance will travel to Anderson, Ind. next weekend, April 28-29, for the annual Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Anderson University. The first day of competition begins at 1 p.m. on Friday.
