Defiance's top senior Tom Postema did not take off any time and continued his outstanding 2013 campaign with another solid outing. The Tinora High product amounted to top finishes in the shot put (17.04 meters) and hammer throw (54.41 m), while also grabbing fourth place in the discus (44.49 m). Postema's heave in the discus was a new Defiance College record and moved him up to fourth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. III rankings.
There were a few other field athletes that excelled on the afternoon as well. Junior Anthony Nolfi registered distance of 46.87 meters in the hammer throw to finish second right behind Postema. He also scored ninth in the javelin at 39.40 m. Juniors Luiyi Nunez and Jacob Arnold also notched top-10 marks, as they took eighth (41.86 m) and (41.23 m) in the hammer, respectively.
In pole vaulting action, sophomore Ryan Johnston eclipsed a height of 3.95 meter for his best mark this outdoor season and grabbed ninth overall.
Finally, the men's 4x100-meter relay squad of Johnston and freshmen Vinnie Perez, George Roth and Kevin Wynn clocked in a seventh-place time of 45.56 in the team event.
Next weekend the Defiance College track and field squad will travel back to North Manchester where the Spartans are hosting the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships. Action will kick-off at 12 p.m.
