Postema, Bingley Set to Compete at National Championships
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College junior Tom Postema and sophomore Kim Bingley will represent the Yellow Jackets at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships held in Claremont, California from May 24 until May 26.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College junior Tom Postema and sophomore Kim Bingley will represent the Yellow Jackets at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships held in Claremont, California from May 24 until May 26.
Postema, who also competed at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, will compete in the hammer throw, discus and shot put at the three-day event. The product of Tinora High was recently named the Great Lakes Regional Field Athlete of the Year.
Postema set the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship record in the discus with a throw of 180-04.40. The toss also broke the Defiance College record and is the third-best mark in the nation this year.
Currently, Postema ranks third in the nation in the discus, sixth in the hammer throw and 20th in the shot put. His sixth-place distance in the hammer throw was 194-10.00. He was named HCAC Field Athlete of the Week twice during the outdoor season and was the outdoor All-Ohio champion in the hammer throw. Postema was also named First Team All-HCAC.
Bingley will compete in the heptathlon, an event she took second in at the Ron Althoff Invitational with 4346 points. Bingley moved to 19th in the nation in the heptathlon with the finish. Her performance included several Defiance College top five and top ten results. She entered the top five in the DC record books in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.29 and the 200-meter dash with a mark of 27.21. Bingley is now sixth all-time in the 800-meter run at 2:28.32 and joined the top ten in the high jump, shot put and long jump.
The product of Ottawa-Glandorf High was named Honorable Mention All-HCAC for the outdoor season. Bingley started off the HCAC Championships with a fourth-place finish in the shot put. On day two, Bingley added another impressive display for Defiance by earning fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.20. She was fifth in the 100-meter dash at 14.04, and wrapped up the event with a sixth-place mark of 97-00 in the javelin.
The NCAA National Championships will begin at 6:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, May 24.
