DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Defiance College men's tennis team opened up the 2016 spring season with a 9-0 win over Olivet (Mich.) College at the George M. Smart Athletic Center.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) took an early 3-0 lead over the Comets (1-3) after sweeping doubles play. The first doubles team of junior James Demeo (Oregon/Clay) and sophomore Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich. /Bedford) defeated their opponent 8-1. Junior Tory Savage (Bryan) and sophomore Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) played the second slot, while juniors Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) and Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind. /Wabash) secured the third slot with 8-0 wins for each team.
Defiance continued the momentum into singles play and walked away with wins at all six positions to finalize the 9-0 match victory in favor of the Yellow Jackets. Demeo won at first singles 6-4, 7-6 (6-0). Swisher defeated his Comet foe 6-3, 6-0 at the second singles spot. Savage played third singles and won by a match score of 6-1, 6-1. Widman played the fourth slot and finished with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Rounding out the singles players were Kurtz and Height who both finished victorious with scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
The Purple and Gold will look to continue their winning ways when they host Alma (Mich.) College on Tuesday, Mar. 1 in non-conference play. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
