Yellow Jackets Fall To The Fightin' Engineers

DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Defiance College men's tennis team hosted Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and dropped the match by a score of 9-0.
Defiance (8-5, 3-1 HCAC) had its closest match against the Fightin' Engineers (7-4, 5-0 HCAC) in the second doubles with the team of senior Ryan Nelson (Oregon/Clay) and sophomore James Demeo (Oregon/Clay). The pair battled back-and-forth and finished with a match score of 9-7 in favor of Rose-Hulman.
The first doubles team consisting of seniors Mike Ross (Bryan) and Justin Walker (Wilson, N.C. /Hunt) fell by a score of 8-1 and the third doubles team of sophomore Tory Savage (Bryan) and freshman Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich. /Bedford) dropped their match by a score of 8-3.
Going into singles play, the Yellow Jackets were down 3-0. Ross was defeated at the first singles spot by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Demeo dropped his match by a 6-1, 6-3 decision at the second singles spot. Playing third singles, Nelson battled his opponent to a 7-5, 6-2 decision. Walker played fourth singles and fell by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Savage forced his fifth singles match to go into three sets with a final score of 0-6, 6-1, and 10-4. Swisher rounded out the singles play for Defiance and finished with a score of 6-4, 6-0. Defiance battled in singles play but ultimately came-up empty handed giving the 9-0 decision to the visiting Fightin' Engineers.
The Purple and Gold will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 15 when they travel to Anderson, Ind. to face HCAC foe Anderson (Ind.) University. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
