HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Defiance College men's tennis team had a crazy day to start its play at the Spring Break Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C. The Jackets' first match of the day was delayed and then cancelled due to rain. Then the Purple and Gold's second match ended under the lights, as the match concluded after 10 p.m.
After the aforementioned cancellation of the scheduled morning matchup with Ohio Wesleyan, the Jackets took the court against St. Mary's College of Maryland in the afternoon. Due to the wet conditions play did not begin until nearly 4:00 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets battled the Seahawks in the opening doubles matches but St. Mary's was just too strong, as SMC swept all three matches by scores of 8-4 or 8-5.
The Purple and Gold was overmatched in singles action as well. The Seahawks won all six matches in straight-sets, as Defiance dropped its first match of the team's annual spring break trip by a score of 9-0.
With the loss the Yellow Jackets' record falls to 1-3 on the season. DC is back in action on Thursday, March 14, as the squad plays Methodist in the morning at 10:00 a.m. and then Saint Joseph's under the lights at 6:00 p.m.
