Nelson Continues Winning Ways Despite DC Defeat

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jacket men's tennis team hosted Alma College and Grand Rapids Community College for a tri-match on Saturday. The Jackets were unable to win either match, losing both by scores of 8-1.
Defiance College squared off against Grand Rapids in the morning match. DC got shutout in doubles play and was down 3-0 heading into singles action.
In singles play, the Purple and Gold managed to claim a point at the number four singles position. Freshman Ryan Nelson won his match by a score of 9-7. The win was Nelson's third consecutive victory at the four singles position.
The afternoon match played out much like the first for the Yellow Jackets. DC faced Alma and was defeated by a score of 8-1. Against Alma, Defiance was swept in doubles play, and Nelson toughed out another close match in singles. The freshman won the first set with a score of 6-4 and jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second. Nelson dropped three straight games before holding on to record his fourth straight win. Nelson's season record now stands at 7-4 in singles play.
Senior Trevor Ault nearly won his match at one singles. Ault claimed the first set by a score of 6-3 and then dropped the second. Ault was outdueled in the third set tiebreaker 10-7.
The Yellow Jackets are next in action on Wednesday, March 28 as they head to Tiffin, Ohio to play Heidelberg. The match is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
