Penalty kick sinks Defiance at home against Baldwin Wallace
DEFIANCE, Ohio – In Saturday's men's soccer battle of the Yellow Jackets, Defiance College dropped a 1-0 decision to Baldwin Wallace at windy Winsper Knobel Field.
Baldwin Wallace improved to 4-4-1 on the year thanks to the game's lone goal off a penalty kick with 20:48 left in regulation. Following a DC handball inside the box, BW's Owen Reyes fired home the eventual game-winner.
The loss dropped Defiance to 3-4-2 and resulted in the team's first loss since September 9 at Case Western Reserve, the team's third match of the season.
The possession was evenly distributed through much of the contest but Defiance was not able to turn their time with the ball into shots. Baldwin Wallace outshot DC 22-11 with 10 total shots on goal compared to just two for Defiance. Defiance keeper Orry Killam knocked down nine shots in the contest to keep the Jackets within one score.
Defiance's best first-half opportunity came on a free kick by Griffin Meyer in the 25th minute, which turned out to be the only shot on goal in the first half. For Baldwin Wallace over the first 45 minutes, Julian Kieres had an open shot in front of the net during the 29th minute but lost his footing on the kick then sailed the ball over the crossbar when he recovered. Another prime chance formulated quickly on a breakaway in the 38th minute but Defiance defender Andrew Promsurin slid over to cut off the attempt just as fast as it appeared.
In the second half, a scoring chance opened up for Defiance during the 62nd minute when Meyer set up a pass for Jack Stanoikovich to the left side of the box but the attempt missed wide right. Moments later, Riley Hensley put DC's second shot on goal when he had an open look in front of the net knocked down by Sam Cipriano in the net for BW. Baldwin Wallace nearly added another goal with 8:15 remaining, but the header through the pipes was wiped out due to an offsides call.
The next date on the pitch for the Yellow Jackets is at Manchester on Wednesday as Defiance begins the conference slate within the HCAC. The kickoff against the Spartans is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
