DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College men's soccer team battled Transylvania (Ky.) University to a 1-1 double overtime tie at the Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
Transylvania (5-3-6, 2-1-2 HCAC) struck early in the first half, needing just 5:20 to get on the scoreboard with a lead of 1-0. Defiance (4-9-1, 0-4-1 HCAC) produced one shot in the period by senior Jordan Drake (Maumee/Springfield), but the shot was blocked by the Transy defense.. The remainder of the half was a battle for the ball by both defenses as neither team found the back of the net the rest of the way and the first period concluded with the Pioneers ahead, 1-0.
In the second half, it was Defiance who struck early. Sophomore Nick Kleptz (Troy) capitalized on a penalty kick at the 49:41 minute mark to tie the game at 1-1. The Yellow Jackets totaled five shots in the period that included a scoring chance by Drake during the 68th minute, but the shot would end up in the hands of the Pioneer goalkeeper. The remaining shot attempts for DC were not on net. Transy continued to pile on the shots at the Defiance goal with four shots on net, but DC goalkeeper, freshman Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky), stopped all of them keeping the game tied after regulation, forcing overtime.
The first and second overtime periods mirrored each other. The Pioneers kept the shots coming with their best scoring opportunity coming on a shot late in the first overtime that ended up hitting the post and bouncing back out to where it was cleared by the Jacket defense. Transy had a few scoring chances in the final overtime period with a pair of corner kicks and a header, but neither attempt found the mark as Musgrave came up with a save and solid defensive play by DC, held off the Pioneer attack and preserved a 1-1 double overtime tie.
In net for the Jackets, Musgrave made a total of seven saves in the game. He played all 110 minutes and is now 1-3-1 overall for the season.
Defiance will travel to Bluffton, Ohio to take on Bluffton University on Wednesday (Oct. 21) in a HCAC matchup at 3:30 p.m.
