DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College men's soccer team shutout Baldwin Wallace University with a final score of 1-0 at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
Throughout the first half of play Defiance (4-5) and Baldwin Wallace (3-6-1) battled for possession. Freshman Adam Ordel (Lima/Elida) took a headshot at the 14:00 minute mark, but it was saved by the BW goalkeeper. The DC defense fought off the opposing Yellow Jackets from scoring in the first half despite being outshot, 11-1. After the first 45 minutes of play the game was tied at 0-0.
In the second half, Defiance ended the stalemate when freshman Henok Jones (Georgetown, Ind./Floyd Central) scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game ten seconds into play. Defiance looked to add to its lead later in the period with additional scoring chances by Jones, sophomore Mark Willams (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) and freshman Josiah Nichols (Weston/Bowling Green), but neither shot would find the back of the net. The lone goal by Jones earlier in the period proved to be all the Yellow Jackets needed as Defiance held BW to only six shots in the second half and went on to post the 1-0 victory.
In net for the Yellow Jackets was freshman Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky). Musgrave remained in net for the entire match and had a perfect game with zero goals against and eight saves.
Defiance will be traveling to Terre Haute, Ind. for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game against Rose-Hulman Institute of the Technology next Saturday (October 3) in the conference opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be part of a soccer doubleheader with the DC women's team. The women will precede the men with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
