DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance men's soccer team lost to Ohio Northern University with a final score of 5-1 at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
The Defiance (3-5) defense stayed with the Ohio Northern (6-3) offense early on in the first half, but the Yellow Jacket offense struggled with just two shots during the period. Senior Jordan Drake (Maumee/Springfield) took one of those shots, but it landed in the hands of the ONU goalkeeper. Later in the half, freshman Josiah Nichols (Weston/Bowling Green) produced the second scoring attempt for DC on a header, but it would again be kept out of the net by the Polar Bear netminder. Meanwhile, ONU grabbed the lead with its first goal of the period just 4:45 into the game. The Polar Bears then added goals during the 25th and 35th minutes to lead 3-0 at the break.
In the second half, ONU kept up the offensive pressure and tacked on another goal at the 49:23 mark off of a loose ball in the goal box to increase the margin to 4-0. The Polar Bears tallied their final score of the game during the 55th minute to go up by a commanding 5-0 advantage. The Jackets broke the shutout when freshman Henok Jones (Georgetown/Floyd Central) soared a shot past the goalie at the 61:47 mark to make the score 5-1. Jones' score was also his first career goal at Defiance. The Jones goal was the final points of the game as ONU cruised to the 5-1 victory.
Junior Damien Koester (Englewood/Brookville) started for the Jackets and played the entire first half. He ended the game with four saves and allowed three goals. Freshman Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) replaced Koester and played the entire second half. In 45 minutes, Musgrave had six saves and gave up a pair of goals.
Defiance will host Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday (Sept. 26) as part of a soccer doubleheader with the Yellow Jacket women's team. The women will also be taking on BW with their game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.
