Four Yellow Jackets recognized with HCAC awards
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets were well represented this year with individual awards after a strong 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets were well represented this year with individual awards after a strong 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference campaign. Senior Sean Roberts led the tough Yellow Jackets defense all season and was named Co-Defensive Most Valuable Player. DC was also able to get one person on each the First Team All-HCAC, Second Team All-HCAC, Honorable Mention All-HCAC, and HCAC All-Sportsmanship Team. [All-HCAC Teams]
Roberts (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Canal Winchester) had a great season in goal for the Yellow Jackets. For his efforts on the year he was named Co-Defensive Most Valuable Player and to the First Team All-HCAC. Roberts put up very impressive numbers this year on his way to achieving his accolades. His 1.20 Goals Against Average for the season is best for Defiance College in the history of the program. Roberts also ended his career with a 1.59 GAA, which is best since Jeff Meyer ended his career with a 1.45 in 2005. Roberts led the HCAC in saves with 84. The senior saved .785 percent of the shots on goal that he faced. Roberts won 10 games this season and 19 games in his career, both tops for DC since Meyer won 14 games in 2003 and 38 in his career.
Kevin Arriola (New Lebanon, Ohio / Dixie) was named to the Second Team All-HCAC for his efforts this season. The junior scored 10 goals and put up 22 points on the season, which was good for fourth and fifth in the HCAC respectively. Those marks were also best for DC in a single season since Brandon Able but in 12 goals and 28 points. Arriola also ended the season by pushing up his career numbers to 18 goals and 38 points. Those marks put him tied for first and in second on the career list respectively with his senior season to go.
Junior Drew Metz (Northwood, Ohio / Lake) was named to the Honorable Mention All-HCAC list for his play this season. Metz finished with 14 points on the season, which was good for a tie in 12th in the HCAC. He also finished with six assists this season which put him in fourth place in that category for the HCAC. This six assists this season was most since 2009 when Greg Vogt hit the same number. Metz is now tied for third in career assists with those six with his senior campaign to go.
Blayne Robbins rounds out the awards for DC. The sophomore was named to the HCAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Robbins was one of the leaders on defense this year for the Yellow Jackets. Robbins did not get called for any cautions this year while playing in nearly 1600 minutes. Along with receiving no cards, Robbins also scored a goal for DC this season.
