NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Defiance men's soccer team improved its play from the previous day, but was still defeated 2-1 by the Muskingum Muskies on Saturday, September 15. The Jackets, still searching for their first win, drop to 0-7-0, while the Muskies even out their record at 3-3-1.
The non-conference matchup began with both squads having multiple possessions of good ball-handling and offense. Through the first forty minutes, the game couldn't have been more even, as both teams had accumulated five shots a piece, one corner kick, and one yellow card.
Unfortunately, the Jackets stung themselves bad with another yellow card in the 42nd minute that gave Muskingum a penalty shot. The Muskies took advantage of the opportunity as they beat junior goalkeeper Sean Roberts on the attempt to go up 1-0 and took that lead into halftime.
That goal gave Muskingum the momentum in the game and it continued into the second half, as they came out of the break and notched another score only four minutes in to pull ahead 2-0.
Defiance never gave up though, as they kept attacking the Muskingum defense. In the first period, they could only register five shots, but they turned up the intensity and doubled their shot total for 10 in the second period.
In the 68th minute, one of those shots hit the back of the net, as sophomore Ian Fasnacht cleaned up the trash and poked in a goal off a rebound for his first of the season. DC was back in striking distance of tying up the match at 2-1.
However, the Muskies defensive effort held strong and kept the Jackets out of the goal for the rest of the match as they came away with the hard-earned win at home.
DC returns home for its next match when they take on another OAC foe in Heidelberg on Wednesday, September 19. The game is set to kick off at 4 p.m.
