DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College men's soccer team played its heart out in a physical match with the Alma Scots, but a well-placed corner kick by the visitors with just over two minutes left in the second overtime, led to a game-winning goal that sent the Jackets to a 2-1 defeat and second loss in the DC Purple and Gold Classic.
With the defeat, DC falls to 0-2 on the season, while Alma evens out its record to 1-1 on the year.
The Scots got on the board first in the ninth minute when a kick into the box had both teams scrambling for the ball and Alma's Zach Vandeveer came through with it as he notched it into the lower left corner.
Defiance didn't let the early deficit get to them. Just over 20 minutes later in the 30th minute, sophomore Kevin Arriola scored his and the team's first goal of the season when he booted a frozen rope from over 30 yards out to tie the match at one all.
From the point on, the game turned into a fight for every inch as both squads played very physical. In total, the match featured five yellow cards as the referees were being kept busy.
The game ended up heading into overtime as neither squad could poke in several chances at the goal. Both teams were then held scoreless in the first overtime with only one shot being registered by Defiance. As the second overtime winded down, both the Jackets and Scots were scrambling to score.
Then with just over two minutes remaining, an Alma corner kick gave them an opportunity to score and they took advantage as the Scots Nathan Brown punched in the game-winner. It was a hard loss to swallow for the Jackets.
DC's next game is set for Friday, September 7 when the team travels to Ada, Ohio to play the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern. The game is set to kick off at 3 p.m.
