DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than ten minutes into the first period against Great Lakes Christian College on Tuesday evening, and finished with a season-high five goals on the scoreboard and their second defensive shutout in as many games.
A season-high 30 players made an appearance in the game for the Jackets, who will now turn their attention to their first conference match of the season on Saturday, September 25, against Anderson University.
Joseph Loftis scored first for Defiance, when he collected a deflection off his own corner kick in the fourth minute of the game, and sent it flying past the Crusaders' goalkeeper for the early lead. Jaiden Henderson made it a 2-0 lead at the eight-minute mark, when he stole a pass intended for a GLC defender and tapped it in for his third goal of the season.
Less than one minute later, Tony Cornell picked up his first goal of the season off an assist from Evan Allen to put Defiance ahead, 3-0, at the 8:25 mark.
DC forward, Kyle Johnson, recorded his third assist of the season at the beginning of the second half, when he found Evan Allen in front of the net for an easy score. There would be no more goals until the waning minutes of the game, when DC's Mike Hill scored the fifth and final goal of the contest in his first appearance of the season.
Anderson University will be a good test for the Yellow Jackets when they come to town on Saturday for DC's conference opener. The Ravens started the season 0-3, but have won two of their last three contests, including a 3-1 win over a previously undefeated squad from Trine University last Saturday.
The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m., at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
