DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College men's soccer team was unable to find the net against Olivet on Wednesday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field, falling 1-0 for its first loss of the 2010 campaign.
The Jackets were shutout for the first time in three matches to open the season, despite placing four of their eight shots on goal against the stingy Comet defense. Joseph Loftis led the attack for Defiance with two of his three shots on target.
The score remained locked at 0-0 until the 74th minute, when Olivet's Fred Smyser sent a corner kick into the box and DC was unable to control it. OC's Daniel Hampsten corralled the loose ball long enough to unleash an open shot. The attempt ricocheted off the post and directly across the mouth of the goal to Jacob Jensen, who tapped it in for the 1-0 Olivet lead at the 74:51 mark.
That would be the final, as Defiance could not muster a serious challenge in the closing minutes and fell to 1-1-1 with the loss. The Jackets will continue their season-opening homestand on Saturday, with a 2:00 p.m. match against Marietta.
